Fuel prices these days are absolutely through the roof! This owes to a lot of things including major political events; sadly these factors are well outside our control, and there’s nothing to do but keep plugging away and hope that prices will drop in the future. In the meantime it’s important to cut down on how much you drive.

The easiest way to cut down on how much you use your car is by leaving it at home when you commute to work – public transport is a good option here, but you can also choose to avoid this altogether and work from home. This is becoming increasingly popular as many are using free conference calls and the like to keep in touch with colleagues without leaving their homes. If you have a nice home office, there’s no reason you can’t be just as productive.

It is also possible to walk, cycle or take public transport to most places – you can walk to the gym, stroll to nearby stores and bike with your kids to school. This will save you so much money in the long run. For long trips you can take the train, bus or even fly: sometimes a plane ticket is actually less than the cost of driving for five hours or so.

Many of us grew up in an era when oil prices were cheap and it was affordable driving everywhere; unfortunately this period has ended and you now need to carefully consider how much you drive. This might mean changing your lifestyle and replacing commuting with conference calls into your office, or altering the routine of your daily errands. This is certainly a sacrifice, yet the savings you make can ease the financial burden and allow you to treat your children to the important little things that make life just a bit better.
